Graciela Iturbide. White Fence, RM, 2024, Issue #1

On May 2, 1986, the images that shaped the book were taken. A Day in the Life of America . Graciela Iturbide, who was part of the team of photographers who recorded daily life in different parts of the United States that day, contributed to this time capsule a portrait she took in an apartment in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles, California. There, she was welcomed by a group of Mexican Americans, mostly deaf women, who had ties to the White Fence gang. That first encounter led to the establishment of friendly relations and the composition of a photographic narrative that can be described as the intermittent chronicle of a day that lasted more than three decades, from 1986 to 2019.

This two-volume edition offers a selection of Graciela Iturbide's portraits of her Los Angeles hosts, their environments, moves, and ramifications, and an essay by Alfonso Morales Carrillo that describes the development of this photographic series and the historical background to which it ultimately refers: the formation and persistence of communities with Mexican ancestry north of the Rio Grande.
