The origin of comics

El origen de los comics
  • Origin of the comic

Strictly speaking, the origin of comics dates back thousands of years. Ever since humans first felt the need to draw in order to explain a story, adventure, event, or legend. Ancient hunters painted a hunting scene in the depths of a cave. They did so with a firebrand fresh from the fire, perhaps 14,000 years ago.

  • Why was the comic created?

It was the first in a long history, but Egyptian paintings, Greek vases, Roman frescoes, ecclesiastical paintings, and medieval manuscripts recounting the lives of Jesus and the saints are not considered comics, and we have to wait for social and political satire to find recognizable antecedents of comics.

At first, they are nothing more than mere caricatures or drawings to illustrate a story or short narratives without a solution of continuity.

  • Who invented the comic?

Thomas Rowlandson is considered the inventor of the comic strip in 1809. Rowlandson published “The Travels of Doctor Syntax,” perhaps the first comic or serial adventure in history to have a resonance, and it was at this time that talking speech bubbles made their appearance.

  • Who created the first comic book in the world?

The first graphic novel was published in Switzerland. Inspired by Rowlandson and encouraged by Goethe, the Swiss author Rudolph Töpfer published "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" in 1837, a forty-page book with several drawings on each page and captions.

He was followed by the German poet and artist Wilhelm Bush, who in 1859 published the first caricatures in a newspaper, the Fliegende Blátter, and a famous comic strip titled Max and Moritz. In 1867, Ally Sloper, the first English comic strip character, appeared, created by Charles Ross.

However, according to canons, the first modern comic book published in the world was The Yellow Kid, on February 16, 1896 in the New York newspaper The World.

On December 12, 1897, the German-born American resident, Rudolph Dirks, published in The New York Times what is considered the first comic strip published, The Katzenjammer Kids (Pim, Pam, Pum in Spanish), about two rascals and their mother, Mama Kazenjammer.

Shortly after, in 1889, the first comic strip in France was published, The Fenouülard Family by Georges Colomb. A year later, on May 14, 1890, the English published their first comic book magazine, titled Comic Cuts.

  • Evolution of comics

By the last decade of the 19th century, many American newspapers were publishing half-page or even full-page comic strips, but few were continuous or lasted a few days at most. Bud Fisher's Mutt and Jeff, which began publication on November 15, 1907, is considered the first daily comic strip in the history of comics to achieve significant success, allowing it to continue until 1982.

The strip began as simply A. Mutt, and was published in the sports pages, but the tall, lanky Mutt met the plump Jeff on March 27, 1908, and love struck. They both immediately joined the staff of the San Francisco Examiner, one of Randolph Hearst's newspapers.

In 1910, the monthly magazine The Funnies appeared, consisting solely of comic strips and which gave rise to the first comic book in history in 1933: Funnies on Parade.

  • When did comics arrive in Mexico?

The adventures of Superman and Batman began to enjoy great commercial success in the United States, so expansion to other territories was inevitable. One of the first countries to receive the adventures of the characters from the then National Publications publishing house was Mexico.

In March 1952, the Ediciones Recreativas label, whose name later changed to Editorial Novaro, launched the first issue of Superman for the Mexican market, whose story was published in the American edition Superman #73.

In 1994, they obtained the rights to publish Marvel stories in Mexico, such as Spider-man and X-Men.

While in the United States a wide variety of titles and heroes were coming out that would stay, in Mexico these stories arrived mainly thanks to the pages of Batman and Superman.
